What Research Is Exploring
Using our stricter research standard, this study is more relevant than research on an unidentified generic oil because it examined the matching botanical, Thuja plicata, and described the test material as a commercially available Arborvitae essential oil. The authors were doTERRA employees, which strongly suggests relevance to doTERRA's research program and is also an important potential conflict to disclose. However, this was not a clinical trial in people. Researchers exposed pre-inflamed human dermal fibroblast cells to Arborvitae essential oil and measured changes in proteins and gene expression associated with inflammation and tissue remodeling. The results are useful laboratory evidence for understanding biological activity and deciding what deserves further study, but a cell model cannot establish that applying or diffusing Arborvitae produces those effects in a person or that the oil treats inflammation, wounds, infection, or another medical condition. Human clinical research using an authenticated matching oil would be the stronger next step.
