What Research Is Exploring
Basil is being studied in human clinical research, but the preparation matters. A 2024 randomized, double-blind clinical trial included 100 people with knee osteoarthritis and compared a traditional topical basil-oil formulation with diclofenac gel for four weeks. Both groups improved on several measures, with no significant differences between the groups on the measured outcomes. Importantly, the basil preparation in this study contained sesame oil and was a traditional formulation; it was not this bottle of distilled doTERRA Basil Essential Oil. The study therefore should not be used to claim that this product treats arthritis or pain, but it is an interesting example of researchers investigating basil preparations in humans. More product-specific research is needed.
