What Research Is Exploring
Cardamom essential oil has been studied directly in randomized human aromatherapy research. In a 2022 single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 70 women undergoing elective cesarean delivery with spinal anesthesia were assigned to cardamom essential-oil inhalation or placebo after nausea began. The cardamom group had fewer episodes of nausea and retching and used less anti-nausea medication than the placebo group. Cardamom has also appeared as one ingredient in multi-oil postoperative aromatherapy research, but those blend studies cannot tell us what cardamom contributed by itself. These findings come from specific surgical protocols and do not establish that this retail product treats nausea, vomiting, pregnancy-related symptoms, or any medical condition. More research is needed in other settings and populations.
