What Research Is Exploring

Cinnamon Bark is another good example of why botanical identity, oil chemistry, and study design need to be separated. A doTERRA-affiliated laboratory study examined commercially available Cinnamomum zeylanicum bark essential oil in a human dermal-fibroblast model and measured protein biomarkers and genome-wide gene expression related to inflammation and tissue remodeling. The author affiliation was doTERRA International, making the work particularly relevant to doTERRA's research program, but also creating an important potential conflict to disclose. Most importantly, this was a cell-culture experiment—not a clinical trial in people—so it cannot establish that culinary, aromatic, or topical use of this bottle treats inflammation or another medical condition.

Human cinnamon-oil research uses several different preparations and has produced mixed results. A randomized study of 70 chemotherapy patients reported lower nausea and vomiting severity after cinnamon-essential-oil inhalation compared with saline placebo while patients continued routine anti-nausea treatment. A 2026 double-blind randomized trial of 60 women undergoing cesarean delivery tested cinnamon leaf oil, which is not the same preparation as Cinnamon Bark oil, and found no statistically significant reduction in nausea or vomiting during the first six hours after surgery. A separate double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 64 people tested standardized cinnamon-oil soft capsules for functional dyspepsia; both groups improved, but there was no significant advantage over placebo. These studies should not be treated as interchangeable evidence for doTERRA Cinnamon Bark because the oil source, plant part, chemistry, formulation, and route can differ.
