What Research Is Exploring
Fennel essential oil is beginning to receive more direct human research. In a 2026 exploratory randomized study, 40 participants received either massage with sweet almond oil alone or massage with 1.6% fennel-seed essential oil in sweet almond oil over two months. State-anxiety scores were lower in the fennel aromatherapy-massage group than the massage-only group after the final session, while the reported differences in overall sleep and well-being questionnaire scores were not statistically significant. An older randomized placebo-controlled study in 121 people with irritable bowel syndrome tested an oral capsule combining curcumin with fennel essential oil and reported greater improvement in symptom scores and quality of life than placebo. Because that product combined two active ingredients and used an oral capsule, it cannot tell us what fennel essential oil alone contributed or establish the same effects for this doTERRA bottle. These studies are interesting but preliminary and do not establish that this product treats anxiety, sleep problems, IBS, or another medical condition.
