Ginny's Note
I’ve personally used Petitgrain and like that it gives you a completely different side of the bitter orange tree than a typical citrus-peel oil. If you’re comparing Petitgrain with Bergamot, Neroli, Lavender, or another fresh floral oil, call or text me at 619-851-8236.
What Research Is Exploring
Petitgrain is one of the oils included in a doTERRA-authored study that chemically characterized ten essential oils by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) before testing them in pre-inflamed human dermal fibroblasts. The Petitgrain oil was identified botanically as Citrus aurantium, matching the bitter-orange species associated with Petitgrain. Researchers measured changes in protein biomarkers and gene expression related to inflammatory, immune, and tissue-remodeling processes. The botanical identification and GC-MS analysis make this useful product-provenance research. However, all authors were affiliated with doTERRA and the experiment used cultured cells rather than people, so it cannot establish that this bottle treats inflammation, skin conditions, sleep problems, or another medical condition.
Human research is a separate evidence tier. A 2026 randomized controlled trial in adults age 65 and older used Petitgrain together with Vetiver, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, and Grapefruit in a nighttime aromatherapy blend and reported improvements in several sleep measures. Because five oils were used together, the study cannot tell us whether Petitgrain contributed to the result or, if it did, by how much. It also does not establish that Petitgrain alone treats insomnia. Direct human trials using well-characterized Petitgrain essential oil by itself are still needed.
