What Research Is Exploring
Thyme essential oil has recently been studied directly in randomized human aromatherapy trials. A 2024 randomized controlled trial included 140 hospitalized patients with COVID-19, with 70 assigned to thyme-oil aromatherapy and 70 to control. The researchers reported differences in symptoms, vital signs, and hemodynamic measurements after the intervention. A separate randomized study of 120 hospitalized patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also reported changes in respiratory symptoms and physiological measurements after several days of thyme-oil inhalation. These studies involved ill hospitalized patients, specific inhalation protocols, and clinical monitoring. They do not establish that this retail product prevents or treats COVID-19, COPD, respiratory infection, or any other disease, and they should not be used as a substitute for medical care. They do show that researchers are investigating measurable responses to thyme-oil inhalation in humans, and further independent research is needed.
