What Research Is Exploring
Oregano is another oil where identity and chemistry matter. A doTERRA-affiliated 2017 study examined Origanum vulgare essential oil in pre-inflamed human dermal fibroblasts and identified carvacrol as the major active component. The researchers measured changes in protein biomarkers and gene expression related to inflammation and tissue remodeling. Because the authors were affiliated with doTERRA and the botanical species matches Oregano commonly sold as O. vulgare, this work is more relevant to doTERRA's research program than an unidentified generic oregano oil. It is still a cell-culture study, however, not a human clinical trial, so it cannot establish that using this bottle treats inflammation, wounds, cancer, infection, or another condition.
Independent researchers have also studied chemically characterized O. vulgare essential oils in human-cell models, with results that further illustrate why composition matters: oregano oils can differ substantially in their dominant constituents. Human research remains much more limited and often uses specialized formulations rather than a bottle of essential oil. A recent study of an edible oregano-oil jelly included 91 participants, while earlier research evaluated oregano oil as an additive in a hand-washing experiment. Those studies should not be interpreted as proving the same effects from culinary, aromatic, or topical use of doTERRA Oregano. Research is continuing.
