What Research Is Exploring
Turmeric has an enormous human research literature, but most of it is about curcumin or turmeric extracts—not the volatile essential oil in this bottle. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis included 103 randomized curcumin trials with 7,216 participants, but those findings should not be transferred to Turmeric Essential Oil. Research specifically on turmeric oil is much smaller. An early Phase I study administered turmeric oil orally to nine healthy volunteers for up to three months; seven completed the study, with no clinical, blood, kidney, or liver toxicity reported among completers, while one participant stopped after developing an allergic skin rash. A 2026 review of turmeric rhizome essential oil summarized its chemistry, safety, and pharmacology, but the authors were employees of doTERRA and the company funded the work—an important potential conflict to disclose. The review also emphasizes that commercial turmeric oils can vary in composition. Research is continuing, and the extensive curcumin evidence should not be presented as proof that this essential oil produces the same health effects.
