I’ve personally used Melissa and its aroma is quite different from Lemon essential oil even though Melissa is often called Lemon Balm. If you’re deciding between Melissa, Lemon, Lavender, or another oil for your aromatic routine, call or text me at 619-851-8236.
What Research Is Exploring
Melissa essential oil has been studied directly in randomized human aromatherapy trials. A recent randomized trial of 68 hemodialysis patients compared Melissa essential-oil inhalation three times weekly for one month with refined sweet almond oil and reported between-group differences in anxiety and several symptom measures after the intervention. A 2025 randomized trial of 86 women undergoing IVF also reported lower perceived-stress scores after two weeks of Melissa inhalation compared with placebo. However, results have not always been positive: a rigorous double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 114 people with Alzheimer's disease found no evidence that Melissa aromatherapy was superior to placebo for agitation. These studies used specific clinical populations and protocols and do not establish that this retail product treats anxiety, stress, dementia, kidney disease, infertility, or any medical condition. Research is continuing.
