What Research Is Exploring
Ylang Ylang is one of the oils for which we can make an unusually clear distinction between product provenance and clinical evidence. In a 2017 laboratory study, doTERRA researchers tested Cananga odorata Ylang Ylang essential oil manufactured by doTERRA along with nine other oils. The oils were chemically characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) before being tested in pre-inflamed human dermal fibroblasts. In that cell model, Ylang Ylang primarily affected proteins associated with tissue-remodeling processes. This is a strong match to doTERRA's own research material, but all three authors were doTERRA employees and the study was funded by doTERRA. More importantly, it was an in-vitro cell experiment—not a study in people—so it cannot establish that using this bottle repairs tissue or treats inflammation, pain, anxiety, or another medical condition.
Independent human aromatherapy research provides a different evidence tier and has produced mixed findings. In a 2023 randomized controlled trial of 45 first-time mothers in labor, participants were assigned to Ylang Ylang, lemon, or control groups. Pain scores during active labor were lower in both essential-oil groups than in the control group, while anxiety scores were not significantly different. A separate randomized pilot involving 34 nursing professionals found no between-group improvement in anxiety or physiological measures with Ylang Ylang. These studies involved people, but the publications do not establish that their study oils were chemically equivalent to doTERRA Ylang Ylang. Taken together, the research is interesting but still preliminary and formulation-specific.
