What Research Is Exploring
Bergamot is a good example of why we now look closely at the oil source as well as the study result. A doTERRA-affiliated pilot study examined bergamot essential-oil inhalation in the waiting room of a mental-health treatment center. Fifty-seven eligible participants were included in the analysis; exposure to bergamot was associated with higher positive-affect scores than the control condition. Two authors were affiliated with doTERRA, which makes the work particularly relevant to doTERRA's research program but is also an important potential conflict to disclose. The study was a small pilot rather than a large blinded randomized clinical trial. Separately, an independent controlled clinical study of 60 preoperative patients reported lower anxiety scores after inhaled bergamot essence. Taken together, the studies make Bergamot interesting for continued human research, but differences in oil sourcing, composition, study setting, and design matter. The independent study does not establish that its oil was chemically equivalent to doTERRA Bergamot, and neither study proves that this retail oil treats anxiety or another medical condition.
