Ginny's Note

I’ve personally used Frankincense and consider it one of the oils worth learning about because there is so much interest in both its traditional use and modern research. If you’re wondering how I use it or whether Frankincense fits what you’re looking for, call or text me at 619-851-8236.

What Research Is Exploring

Frankincense is a particularly good example of why we look at both the study result and the exact material researchers tested. A 2017 doTERRA-funded laboratory study used Frankincense essential oil manufactured by doTERRA and confirmed its major constituents by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS): alpha-pinene 57%, limonene 8%, and caprylyl acetate 7%. Researchers exposed pre-inflamed human dermal fibroblast cells to the oil and observed changes in several protein biomarkers and gene-expression pathways. This is unusually relevant product-provenance evidence because the study agent was doTERRA Frankincense and was chemically characterized. However, all three authors were doTERRA employees, the study was funded by doTERRA, and it was a cell-culture experiment—not a clinical trial in people. It therefore shows biological activity under laboratory conditions but cannot establish that topical or aromatic use produces the same effects in a person.

Human essential-oil research is also emerging, but the provenance of those oils must be considered separately. In a recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 120 men undergoing prostate biopsy, inhaled frankincense aromatherapy was associated with lower anxiety and pain scores than placebo during the procedure. Another randomized trial of 70 patients receiving chemotherapy found no significant improvement in fatigue from topical frankincense essential oil compared with carrier oil alone. These human studies are informative, but unless their study oils are shown to match doTERRA's botanical source and chemical profile, we should not assume they tested an equivalent oil. Many other Frankincense studies use Boswellia resin extracts rather than distilled essential oil and are a different category of evidence entirely.
