What Research Is Exploring
Lemongrass is especially interesting because researchers are studying both the whole essential oil and citral, one of its major volatile constituents. A doTERRA-affiliated study examined Cymbopogon flexuosus essential oil—the botanical species relevant to this product—in pre-inflamed human dermal fibroblasts. Citral was identified as its main component, and researchers measured changes in protein biomarkers and gene expression. Both authors were affiliated with doTERRA. This makes the study particularly relevant to doTERRA's research program, but the affiliation is an important potential conflict and the work was performed in cultured cells, not people.
A separate 2024 study coauthored by Brannick Riggs investigated 20 essential oils against two human breast-cancer cell lines, SKBR3 and MCF7. Lemongrass, Lemon Myrtle, Litsea, and Melissa showed strong effects on breast-cancer-cell growth in this laboratory model, and all four contained high levels of citral. The researchers also tested volatile citral and reported antiproliferative effects as well as inhibition of migration and invasion in the cell experiments. This is intriguing mechanistic research, but it is in-vitro breast-cancer cell research—not a study of women with breast cancer. It does not show that diffusing, applying, or consuming Lemongrass treats, prevents, or changes the course of breast cancer in people.
There is also human research in a different area. In a 2025 randomized clinical trial involving 38 dental patients, participants who inhaled lemongrass aroma during nonsurgical periodontal treatment had greater reductions in anxiety scores, heart rate, and blood pressure than the control group. The publication does not establish that its study oil was chemically equivalent to doTERRA Lemongrass. A 2024 scoping review concluded that clinical evidence for lemongrass essential oil remains limited and that more research is needed. Research is continuing.
